wrs – Llámame
Final Thoughts:
Actually, I think this should be 2.5.
I do not know, but this performance feels like this is something that Spain would have sent to Eurovision during the early to mid 2000s. Overall, I thought the performance was oooooook, but the singer definitely needs to work on his vocals. The song itself is definitely catchy. As I am typing this, I am humming Hola, mi bebé-bé. Hola, mi bebé-bé. Llámame, llámame.
Random question: Why was there all that confetti on the stage and who’s gonna clean it up? Actually, maybe this was his second performance after winning Romania’s national selection. So maybe the confetti was released when WRS was announced as the winner.
Random thought: It’s kind of funny when other countries that send songs with Spanish lyrics often do better than Spain. Two examples from ESC21.
El Diablo by Elena Tsagrinou from Cyprus
Loco Loco by Hurricane from Serbia
Romania in last year’s Eurovision
ROXEN – AMNESIA
Semi-final results: 12th place out of 16 performances (85 total points – 58 national juries and 27 public votes)
Final results: Since she did not land in the top 10, she did not advance to the final
I could not find any live ESC performances for this one
Based on the live performance, I was surprised that she received 58 votes from the national juries. I figured that she would have done better with the public votes than the national jury vote. Maybe Roxen’s performance was really strong for the jury performance. For the televised performance, you got a sense that she was not feeling very confident. Also, she was pretty much out of breath during the performance, which was expected because she was doing a LOT in her televised performance. That said, I really loved the contemporary dance and the overall message of self-love/care in the song. I think the performance would have been fine if she did not have to constantly engage with her dancers.
I did feel bad for her because the Romanian ESC delegation kind of threw her under the bus regarding the negative reviews about her performance. The delegation said something like Roxen was not emotionally/technically mature enough for the ESC stage. Ok, if that was the case, why did y’all pick her to represent Romania in ESC21? From my understanding, many ESC contestants do not have a huge say in the staging for their performances. Often after Eurovision, many ESC artists go on to say that they would never compete in Eurovision again. Hell, last year’s ESC representative from the UK has removed all traces of Eurovision from his social media.
